Public Housing Program Bessemer Housing Authority's public housing program provides rental assistance to low-income families in multifamily dwellings. The BHA owns and operates the housing communities, which range from efficiency to 5 bedroom apartments. Families pay 30% of their adjusted annual income as rent. Handicap accessible apartments are available for both families and individuals. Applicant Screening for Public Housing To maintain a safe and harmonious living environment, all applicants for public housing undergo a thorough screening process. A selection panel carefully reviews each application and provides recommendations to the Leasing Officer for acceptance or rejection as potential residents in public housing. The screening process considers various factors such as the applicant's financial history, behavior towards neighbors, record of property damage, and living habits that could impact the well-being of other residents. Any history of criminal activity, including violence or crimes against property, is also taken into account. Section 8 Rental Assistance Program Section 8 is a Rental Assistance Program funded by HUD, aiming to subsidize the rental of privately-owned properties. Bessemer Housing Authority offers several Section 8 Housing Assistance Programs to support eligible individuals and families. These programs include the Section 8 Housing Certificate Program, the Moderate Rehabilitation Program, the Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Moderate Rehabilitation Program, and Project Self-Sufficiency. Through these programs, qualified participants can access affordable housing options in the community. Currently, our Section 8 Programs cover 421 homes.
